Product Review: At Large Nutrition's Nitrean

There’s a lot of discussion about supplements in bodybuilding circles. When comparing these products debates often abound regarding such things as efficacy, quality, potency, frequency and many other nouns ending in ‘y’. But for me two other factors are of primary concern and neither is spelled with that sometime vowel: taste and cost.

It’s not that those other qualities are unimportant to me. But I tend to take it on good faith that the companies I purchase my supplements from are somewhat reputable and that they are all somewhat close in quality to one another. Maybe I’m being naïve, but a ten percent difference in effectiveness doesn’t warrant a 100% increase in price in my book.

That being said, I believe I’ve found a protein powder that satisfies not only my finicky taste buds and parsimonious nature but is sure to please even the most discriminating supplement connoisseur.

Nitrean whey protein powder by At Large Nutrition is a great new blend of whey isolates, whey concentrate, whey hydrolysates, egg albumin, glutamine peptides, and isolated casein peptides, making for a terrifically potent cocktail. Because of its unique mix of whey and casein protein Nitrean claims a time release effect that makes it ideal for pre- and post-workout use, or as an anytime protein boost.

Also unique among protein powders, Nitrean boasts bodybuilder-friendly glutamine among its ingredients.

So Nitrean satisfies the requisites of the supplement cognoscenti with its 24 grams of high quality protein per serving. Now what about my needs? Happily, I can report that chocolate-flavored Nitrean has a pleasant taste– not too sweet like some powders, not sweetly artificial like others. The texture is smooth, the powder mixes well with a spoon, and there’s no aftertaste or clump[s left at the bottom of the glass. Overall a very palatable powder.

And what about the value, all of you in my income bracket ask. Well, how about $32.95 for 4.6 pounds? At seventy 24 gram servings per container that works out to 47¢ each serving. Music to my ears!

While I have yet to try At Large’s other three products– Opticen, Thermocin, and Creatine 500– I’m willing to bet they adhere to the same standards as the excellent Nitrean. Give ‘em a try.
